The wine vintage of the century
One of the world’s greatest living winemakers, Dave Powell has made the best wines of his career under his new label, Neldner Road. In what is being hailed as the vintage of the century, the entire vintage of his 2021 single-vineyard wines will be sold by the barrel as NFTs – the first time such a marriage of technology and tradition has ever been undertaken. Indeed, no one has ever sold an entire vintage by the barrel before – but Dave has always liked to do things a little differently.
Since founding his first label in 1994, Dave Powell has been making wines that consistently rank among the best in the world. The average score for all the single-vineyard wines Dave has made is over 96 points, as rated by The Wine Advocate, making them “extraordinary wines of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.” (The Wine Advocate). Dave’s wines have rated 99 or 100 more than 20 times, making him one of the most highly-ranked winemakers on the planet.
The vines of the Barossa Valley are some of the oldest of their kind on the planet, far older than the famous vines of Bordeaux. In the late 1800s, France and Europe suffered an epidemic of phylloxera, an aphid that caused wholesale decimation of vineyards. Almost none of those old growth vines survive today – vineyards were replanted on American rootstock that provided resistance to phylloxera. At the same time the vineyards of France were being destroyed, new settlers in the Barossa were making wine from young grape vines they’d imported from Europe. These vines, which today provide the fruit for Neldner Road, are the original European vines – living fossils that survived the catastrophe that killed all the rest of their kind. Now more than 150 years old, they are an utterly unique piece of growing, breathing history.
Why does this matter? Old vines produce better fruit. As they age, vines make less fruit, and therefore all the flavours and character of the vineyard is concentrated in the very limited quantities of grapes these vines produce. In more than four decades in the Barossa, Dave has found, tended, and in some cases brought back from rack and ruin, the very best of these ancient vineyards. The wines of Neldner Road are named for the families who planted the vines in the first place: Brennecke, Loechel, Kraehe, Steinert, Kleinig and Hermann. Each has its own inimitable character, which varies every year, making each vintage of these wines unique creations that can never be imitated or repeated.
Why sell wine via NFT? Simply, it allows Dave to package his premium wines with the other things he loves about winemaking memorable experiences; sharing with friends; travel; great food and stories to last a lifetime. We always like to try new things and believe that NFTs and wine seem like the perfect match. It reminds us of how wines are sold in Bordeaux through their en primeur system, which has been in operation for over a century. Like en primeur, people who purchase an NFT could be at an advantage over the normal wine buyer, who will pay full retail price once the wine hits the open market.
NFTs guarantee provenance, which is great, but it's more about bringing our wines to a new audience who we think will be interested in what we're doing.
NFT stands for "non-fungible token." At a basic level, an NFT is a digital asset that links ownership to unique physical or digital items, such as works of art, real estate, music, or wine
Other than offering an enhanced experience, it also offers provenance for collectors. NFTs could one day help combat wine fraud. From cellar to cellar, they’re able to see who owned it before.
